How to save a life...

WOW, what a fabulous and inspirational weekend we have had.

We had the privilege of attending the British Transplant Games in Medway, Kent in support of Crummy Hubby who was participating.  In 2005, after a period on dialysis Crummy Hubby had a kidney transplant.  His kidney was donated by his Maw, and I am pleased to say that 7 years and two children later it is still going strong!  Coming from sporty families the British Transplant Games is something Crummy Hubby and I wanted to get involved with, and we’ve met so many inspirational people along the way.

The Transplant Games started in Portsmouth in 1978, as a way of encouraging transplant patients to keep fit and healthy, while raising awareness of the importance of Organ Donation.   They are open to both children and adults, with all the major transplant centers around the UK represented by a team of athletes.  It has to be said, the biggest and most supported teams come from GOSH (Great Ormond St), and Evelina  Children’s Hospital (Guys and St Thomas’).  It is truly heart-warming to see these children taking part in sporting events and living their lives to the full!
This year Crummy Hubby took part in 6 events – the Badminton Doubles, 400m, Discus, Shot Putt, Ball Throw and the 4x100m relay.  He received a Bronze Medal in the Discus and a Silver Medal in the Ball Throw.   The Portsmouth Team did well this year:

Gold x 10
Silver x 10
Bronze x 2

What is truly amazing though, is that all of these athletes have had life-saving, major surgery in the form of an organ transplant; and not only that they are committed to keeping themselves fit and healthy in honour of the gift that their donor has given them.  The Games are not only for the athletes, but also for the donor families.  People who, in  the face of a great personal tragedy, decided to give the gift of life by agreeing to donate their loved ones organs.  It must be incredibly moving for them to see the huge difference organ transplants make to individuals.  This year , it was also great to get some local news coverage… Not quite wall to wall coverage on BBC 3 with Claire Balding commentating but it’s a step in the right direction!

At the 2012 Games, many of the athletes (Crummy Hubby included!) will have been hoping to get selected to represent Great Britain at the World Transplant Games, to be held in Durban, South Africa in 2013.  I’ll keep you posted….

The next British Transplant Games will be held in Sheffield from the 15-18 August 2013.

As I previously mentioned, the purpose of the Transplant Games is twofold… not only to encourage transplant patients to keep fit and healthy, but also to raise awareness of organ donation.  Organ donation is a subject that is close to my heart (as you can well imagine), and I would like to take this opportunity to encourage you all to look into signing the NHS Organ Donation Register. I have seen first hand the difference receiving a transplant can make to someone’s quality of life, and each and every one of the 600 athletes who took part in the Games over the weekend is testament to that.

All by myself....

My hubby was unexpectedly taken in to hospital a few weeks ago.  He needed IV antibiotics to clear up an infection, and this meant a 3 night stay!

I can now honestly say I have a whole new respect for single parents, and forces wives.  How do they do it!

My sojourn into single-parentness was brief to say the least - but still no housework got done, no tidying was done and it was all I could do to stay on top of the clothes washing and keep the kids and I fed, watered and clean! It took a while to get back on top of it all as well....

I have to say this Miss Bags really helped me out a lot... she got herself dressed, helped look after the Wilburbeast, and there were NO tantrums.  None. At. All!

I guess had Crummy Hubby been away for longer, I would have had to get into more of a routine with housework, do online shopping from Sainsbugs, and in short just do what everyone else does and get on with it!

Life in the Crummy household has settled back into what passes for normal here now, but everytime I feel like yelling at Crummy Hubby for not doing something (usually cleaning toilets), or not doing it "properly" I catch myself, and think of all this things he does do... and how lucky I am to have him.

Happy Mother's Day - and Thank You, Mum!

Until I had children of my own, I never really understood why my mum did some of the things she did as we were growing up. Think, "You're not going out like that!", the wet towel on the bed argument, and "eat your vegetables!"  I just thought she was out to get me!  Now I realise, it was all part of protecting me, teaching me, and loving me!

When I gave birth to Miss Bags, four years ago now, alongside the overwhelming love and joy of having a baby, I was also filled with awe and respect. Not just for what my amazing body had done, but for what my own mum had done for me! I have always been close to my mum, but giving birth myself has increased that bond.

As its Mother's Day tomorrow, I wanted to take this opportunity to say Thank You, Mum!
  • Thank you for teaching me how to cook, even if I did wreck your ceramic hob with boiling sugar!
  • Thank you for teaching me about birds, wildlife and flowers, so that when I am on walks with my children, I can pass on that knowledge
  • Thank you for making me laugh
  • Thank you for being my friend
  • Thank you for teaching me how to sew, even if I do ask you all the time!
  • Thank you for sharing your love of cross-stitch and knitting with me
  • Thank you for being there, no matter what
  • Thank you for rescuing my baking disasters, and teaching me how to make cakes
  • Thank you for helping me in the garden, and passing on your green-fingered tips!
  • Thank you for watering my houseplants so they don't die.
  • Thank you for my childhood
  • Thank you for being the best mum ever!

Now I have two children I have come to realise how much I rely on mum (and dad for that matter) for advice, childcare and just that little bit of perspective when it all gets too much! I see the nurturing, loving relationship my children have with their Grandparents and I am so heartwarmed by it!  My children are VERY lucky indeed to have both sets of grandparents who are such a huge part of their lives!

Just like mum.....

I find myself saying things that my mum used to say to me, "eat your vegetables", "take your coat off, or you won't feel the benefit when you go back outside" and "because I'm your mother, and I SAID so!".  I'm sure that the wet towel on the bed argument is yet to come; as is the "right, I'm only washing your clothes if they are IN the basket!" row!  As I say and think these things, I realise I might be more like my mum than I care to admit (yep, right down to our irrational intolerance of traffic jams, and moronic drivers!); but, if I am HALF the mother to my children that she was to me and my brother, then my children are truly blessed indeed!

Thank you, Mum..... I love you x

Babies don't keep

We've been away to Scotland to stay with Granny and Grumpy for a few days... We had a great time, the M6 was not nearly as hideous as it can be, the kids loved seeing Granny, Grumpy and Disney dog.... not forgetting Auntie Carol and Uncle Ed.  Wee Maisie met her fifth great-grandchild for the first time... and let's just say the Wilburbeast was a complete Charmer! I was introduced to the wonders of Picquot Ware (but thats a whole other post!)

After a weekend of fun, family, friends and more food and wine than I should have eaten we returned home, some of us 4lb heavier.... all of us tired!  The big news while we were away is that two of our dear friends gave birth... to Baby Joshua and Baby Matthew.... congratulations guys - you know who you are!  With that news in mind, as I dashed about from pre-school, to supermarket, via cleaning the bathroom and washing yet MORE socks I was reminded of this.....

and I thought who cares if the washing isn't done yet, and the only food we have in is 2 week old broccoli and fish fingers.  I stopped rushing from pillar to post and thought, I'm supposed to be ENJOYING this.... not racing each day till bedtime!

SO,
We built a Lego house for Daddy even though he won't fit
We laughed at The Wilburbeast bouncing in the doorway
We all cuddled on the sofa before bed
We hula-hooped in the garden
We went for a walk to the swings
Miss Bags helped feed The Wilburbeast.
We had a great time!

While it is important for us to wear clean clothes, eat healthy food and live in clean houses, and OK, that does require doing housework, laundry and visiting the supermarket occasionally, I have decided I am going to enjoy, involve and appreciate my children everyday.... After all Babies Don't Keep!
